New lapel video shows police finding man accused of hiding and breaking into APS school

A local school started the school year quite eventfully, and it wasn't what parents would have liked.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A local school started the school year quite eventfully, and it wasn't what parents would have wanted.

A teacher was unable to get into her classroom and what police found surprised everyone – a man barricaded himself inside.

Now we can see better how everything went down. Newly released lapel video of the break-in shows how it all started the night before.

APS police arrested the man on Monday morning in August. But police originally searched the school the previous Sunday evening and claimed they found no one on school grounds.

Now a new video shows how it all happened. The video shows how teachers at La Mesa Elementary School in northeast Albuquerque began their day in August.

On August 19, Albuquerque Public Schools police officers found Tazzy Mora barricaded in a kindergarten classroom.

Mora was found after reports of a break-in at the school the night before.

The lapel video shows an APS officer searching the school that night.

The lapel video shows the couple searching for about 20 minutes but finding no one. But finding out how he got in.

The officers report that the building has been evacuated and leave. School security videos appear to show Mora walking through an outside gate and attempting to break into the school.

Inside, security video shows him walking through the hallways. Then, the next day, officers first smelled Mora before finding him. He admitted to defecating in the classroom and officers questioned him. He said he was taking fentanyl pills.

The school administration did not seem happy at the time of the arrest.

“I have never been so angry in my life as I was today when I called the APS police and I felt that they treated me very dismissively: 'Ma'am, we know about the burglar, we have already evacuated the building. '“

We showed a video to some La Mesa parents on Monday and they weren't too happy either.

“It’s so emotional for us to see that. And you know, every day I think: Is my daughter okay? You know, is there something he left behind in a classroom? You know, the classroom is barely cleaned,” said a concerned parent from La Mesa.

Mora told police that he had been followed and hidden at school, unaware that classes were in session again.

He was charged with burglary and released from prison on conditions. But last month, Mora failed to show up for a court date.

At the time of the incident, La Mesa sent an official letter to parents at the end of the day informing them of the incident and adding that the school had been professionally disinfected.
