Where is Burgess on Chicago PD and why is she still gone?

The entire intelligence unit spends an hour searching for the killer, but it's hard to notice that a key member of the team is still missing: Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati). The good news? We know where she is and if she's coming back.

What happened to Burgess? Chicago PD Season 12?

As we learned in Season 12, Episode 1, Burgess is at a police conference. Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) revealed to the team that she was “troubled” by a case she was working on and that she might leave early, but Martel encouraged her to stay because the program would help her in the intelligence unit ” “could give you a head start.”

This could indicate that the detective title is in Burgess' future, as showrunner Gwen Sigan said TV Insider that “someone in the department will be promoted” this season.

“I think it’s someone who has wanted it for a while and made a lot of sense for us,” Sigan said. “In the [writers’] Space, we've talked about this plot for so long, but how do you turn it into a story? How do you make it interesting? How do you make it something that really says something about who this person is and isn’t just a piece of paper?”

In “Blood Bleeds Blue,” we technically get a glimpse of Burgess when she calls Ruzek while he's searching for Martel's killer. However, he immediately listens to her call because he doesn't want to tell her the tragic news.

“She knows Martel, we’ve been friends for a long time,” he tells Officer Kiana Cook (Toya Turner). “I just can't. Not yet.”

Is Burgess coming back? Chicago PD?

Yes! The officer will return Chicago PD in Episode 3, “Off Switch,” an episode that focuses on Atwater. However, once Burgess (and Ruzek) have the time to shine later in the season, something tells us we're in for something special.

All signs point to a Burzek wedding happening in the near future. When Cook asked in the last episode if Burgess was his wife, Ruzek replied, “Soon.” Sigan also confirmed that the writers were brainstorming ideas for their wedding, and Amy Morton (Platt) told us that this season “someone could get married “.

When NBC Insider After meeting with Flueger, he said he definitely “heard the rumor” that the longtime on-screen couple would tie the knot. What amazes the actor is the way the production manages to create such a joyful occasion for a police procedural that usually deals with extremely dark themes.

“I'm assuming it'll probably be mid-season… I just don't know how they're going to do it,” he says. “That’s my big thing. I don't know it.” [how] We're doing our show and celebrating a wedding at the same time. Maybe there will be a murder at the wedding. You know? I feel like I don't know how else to do it. So I'm interested to see it.

He continues: “We have a pretty talented writers room though, so I’m sure they’ll pull a rabbit out of the hat. I’m really excited to see how they pull it off.”

As for Squerciati, when I talk to him NBC Insider In January, she joked about Burgess' possible appearance on the big day: “MMaybe it will be me [wearing a] Black wedding dress or something.”
