Drug bust in Chambers County results in 40 arrests and over 80 charges

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) – More than 80 charges have been filed as part of a massive drug raid led by the Chambers County Sheriff's Office, the Chambers County Drug Task Force and several other agencies.

“Drugs have no age range. There’s everything from teenagers to the elderly,” said Adee Nelms of Lafayette.

Drugs are a nationwide problem, and the problem is growing in small communities in eastern Alabama. Between May and September, authorities arrested 40 people.

“It's exactly what we do. We conduct operations, search warrants and traffic stops, all of which resulted in the execution of five search warrants,” said Robert Chambers, project manager for the Chambers County Drug Task Force.

Due to a new Chambers County law, News Leader 9 was unable to obtain the individuals' mugshots. The ages of those arrested are between 20 and 70 years old. Chambers said they work closely with all Chambers County agencies and conduct these types of operations quarterly to keep the number of drug-related problems down.

“Everyone has a problem with drugs. What we're trying to do is do our best with our task force people here, and that's why we've got everyone in Chambers County involved trying to help us stay on top,” Chambers said.

Nelms said local law enforcement is working hard to keep the county safe and it shows. “I think they are taking a very proactive approach to keeping our community safe and keeping our residents well informed about what is going on,” she said.

Nelms, who has worked in drug courts for the past few years, said drugs are such a big problem because they affect more than just the offender. “It affects not only the individual, but also the people around them, their families, their community. “It’s more than most people realize,” Nelms said.

The following arrests were made:

• Javion Dawson, 20, of Lagrange, Georgia – Possession of Marijuana 2nd.
• Printis Malk Williams, 25, of Lanett – Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine), Possession of Marijuana 1st, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
• Germela Kristyen Ferguson, 27, of Lanett – Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine), Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
• Tydarieus Scott, 25, of Lafayette – Possession of Marijuana 2nd, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
• Arthur Young, 47, of Lanett – Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance (Crack Cocaine).
