The Volusia Sheriff's Office arrests an 11-year-old for a school shooting

An 11-year-old was arrested Wednesday after threatening to shoot up his school and then kill himself, the Volusia Sheriff's Office said. Police officers were dispatched to the home of the child who made the threat at Silver Sands Middle School. Upon arrival at the apartment complex, officers spoke with the child's mother, who told them she was sleeping. Police conducted a follow-up investigation on Tuesday and began questioning the child, who initially denied any threats. However, upon further questioning, officers said the child became visibly upset and began crying. He then admitted to submitting the threat tip via FortifyFL. According to police, the child explained that he made the threat because he was angry with his teacher for not letting him turn in overdue work. The probable cause stated by the sheriff was to charge the child with making a written threat to commit a mass shooting/terrorist attack and knowingly giving a false tip to law enforcement. According to police, the child was taken into custody and taken to the Volusia Family Resource Center in Daytona Beach for processing.
