Message from a Heated Mets player to his former teammate: You were wrong

MILWAUKEE – It seems that Jesse Winker, the Mets' designated hitter, is greeted with the loudest ridicule in every stadium outside of Citi Field. It makes sense. If he's on the other side, his boasting can be false and rub you the wrong way.

But when Winker received the loudest boos when the Brewers' PA announcer called his name before Game 1 of the Wild Card Series at American Family Field, it was surprising. This was his former team and the reception was rather cool.

It was even more surprising when his former teammate Willy Adames started berating Winker after he hit a game-winning two-run triple in the second inning.

As soon as it happened, there was a huge buzz on social media. Videos began circulating of Winker turning his head and appearing to say something to Adames as he ran toward second base. However, Winker's face shield blocked any view of his mouth, so there is no clear evidence that this was actually the case.

After the Mets' 8-4 win over the Brewers, Winker was the first to speak to reporters.

“When I took the first round, I was watching Pete (Alonso) and (Mets third base coach Mike Sarbaugh) the whole time,” a visibly upset Winker said. “As soon as I saw the Sarby windmill, I turned my attention to the second one and thought, 'I'm going to the third one.' That's all that happened.

“If you all think I can walk and talk, you don’t know my athletic abilities. That doesn't work.”

However, Adames didn't buy it. He insisted that Winker start a verbal argument.

“I don’t know what was going through his mind, but he just started saying some things,” Adames said, via Bally Sports Wisconsin. “And I just say something back, you know, I don’t know. I think that's the type of player he is. It is what it is.”

When asked if he was disappointed by the exchange, Adames called the incident with his former Brewers teammate “surprising.”

Maybe Adames heard Winker yelling at the Mets dugout, hoping to cheer on his team.

“Let's go!” ESPN cameras captured Winker's statement.

In the end, Winker and the Mets had the last laugh, stealing Game 1 of the best-of-three series after trailing 0-2 after one game and 4-3 after four. All New York needs is to win one of the next two scheduled games to advance to the NLDS.
