A woman accused of threatening an East Hampton school is due in court Thursday

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WFSB) – A woman faces a judge in Middletown after she was arrested for falsely reporting an active shooter at East Hampton Middle School.

While investigators are still trying to determine the motive, Monica Smith of Lebanon faces serious charges including falsely reporting an incident involving injury or death, misuse of 9-1-1 and breach of peace.

The 57-year-old was arrested by police on Wednesday after they say she falsely made a 911 call claiming there was an active shooter at East Hampton Middle School.

When officers arrived at the middle school just before 1 p.m. on Tuesday, they were met by a hysterical Monica Smith, who claimed a shooter was in the building.

Officials entered and immediately ordered the lockdown of all four schools in the district; The area has been swept and deemed safe.

Police said it was determined Smith staged the false threat.

She later posted a $50,000 bond and officials added that she was barred from the East Hampton Public Schools campus.

She faces a judge in Middletown Superior Court on Thursday.
