Local insurance agent arrested for insurance fraud

A local insurance agent was arrested for insurance fraud. Wesley Allen Proffitt, 49, of Mountain Home turned himself in Tuesday morning on insurance fraud charges.

According to the Arkansas Insurance Department's special prosecutor's probable cause affidavit, the Mountain Home Water Department investigated a leak at Proffitt's residence in January and determined the leak was not in the water tank. The city employee spoke to Wesley Proffitt via the video doorbell and shared his findings with him.

About a month later, the same city employee worked where Proffitt is employed, and Proffitt spoke to the employee again about the water leak.

Four days later, Proffitt added service line coverage for his residence. Ten days later, Proffitt filed a lawsuit, reporting a water leak in his apartment.

The insurance company interviewed Proffitt by telephone to ask him about the sequence of events. He told them that someone in his office had filed a $10,000 claim for a water leak, so he decided it would be a good idea to get his own policy. He denied speaking to the city employee in January and said the employee must have spoken to another member of his family. He also denied knowing about the leak before taking out the policy.

Proffitt was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center and released on $5,000 bail.
