Austin first grader arrested and charged with unlawful restraint

A first-grader at an Austin elementary school was arrested for unlawful restraint, prompting the school district to begin termination proceedings.

Austin Independent School District officials say Luis Erasmo Resendiz Alvarado, who taught at Reilly Elementary School, faces a felony charge in state prison.

The allegation was first reported on September 11, when Alvarado was immediately placed on administrative leave. The Austin ISD Police Department conducted an investigation that led to Alvarado's arrest.

“The safety and well-being of your children is our top priority and we acted quickly to resolve this incident,” said Paty Rodriguez, assistant superintendent, and Brandi Hosack, chief human capital officer, in a joint statement to parents .

Because the investigation is ongoing, county officials said they could only provide limited information about the specific allegations and the arrest.
