The Mets took a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but couldn't get a clutch hit after that, which ultimately spelled their demise. They had many opportunities to extend their lead, but never took advantage of them. They left nine runners on base and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

This led to Phil Maton imploding in absolutely spectacular fashion in the eighth set. It wasn't enough that he immediately gave up the game-winning home run, he also gave up the go-ahead two-run home run to pinch-hitter Garrett Mitchell. The ending was just a slap in the face, but the game was lost as all the inning runners were left stranded.
