Inmate charged with killing in Virginia state K-9 prison stabs two conscientious objectors

RICHMOND, Va. – An MS-13 gang member, an inmate at the Greensville Correctional Center, is accused of stabbing two correctional officers. said the Virginia Department of Corrections.

Inmate Axel Wilfredo Ortiz Garcia, 26, attacked the two officers on October 1st. Both officers were taken to a hospital where they were treated and released, VADOC said.

Ortiz Garcia, a confirmed member of the MS-13 gang, is one of four inmates facing charges Killing of K-9 Rivan and assault of a correctional officer in April at Sussex I State Prison, VADOC said.

According to VADOC, Ortiz Garcia was first arrested in 2018 for aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. After being convicted of these charges, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 27 years suspended for the first count and three for the second count, for a total sentence of 16 years.

VADOC said Ortiz Garcia is a Guatemalan citizen. The agency said it would work with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to find a detainee for Garcia's deportation after he completes his sentence.

“Ortiz Garcia was temporarily held at the Greensville Correctional Center pursuant to a court order from the Sussex County Circuit Court in connection with the prosecution of the April violent attack. Due to its high security status, VADOC had requested a reconsideration of this decision,” VADOC said.
