Violent crime cases fell 17.5% in 2024 – Tallahassee reports

As of October 1, 2024, year-to-date numbers indicate that the total number of crimes reported by the Tallahassee Police Department has decreased by 7.9% compared to the same period in 2023.

TR's latest report showed that total crimes have fallen by 6.5% year-to-date (YTD).

The figures show that property crime cases fell by 2.9% and violent crime cases fell by 17.5% during this period.

Property crimes include burglaries, thefts and vandalism. Violent incidents include aggravated assaults, armed robberies and physical altercations.

A look at specific crimes (see table below) shows that the 7.9% decrease in property crime was due to a 2.5% decrease in car-related incidents and a 10.0% decrease in commercial burglaries.

Year-to-date violent crime data shows robberies decreased by 20.0% and assaults and battery decreased by 15.8%.

The four-week trend

The year-to-date downward trend is driven by a recent double-digit decline in violent crime incidents. In the four-week period ending September 29, violent crime fell 49.0% compared to the same period in 2023.

However, the last four weeks have seen an increase in property crime, led by a 28.9% increase in car break-ins and thefts. On Thursday, September 18, TPD reported 24 car break-ins and two car thefts.

Fatal shootings

During the reporting period, there were 19 fatal shootings in 2024, compared to 19 fatal shootings in 2023. In 2023, the year ended with a total of 24 fatal shootings.
