Manchester United look to end a three-game winning streak against Porto on Thursday as both teams aim for their first win of the UEFA Europa League season. United opened the competition last week with a 1-1 draw against Twente, another disappointing result on the record for coach Erik ten Hag and Co. Their point is still better than Porto's zero point since the Portuguese team last week a 2:3 defeat against the group of ten Bodo/Glimt came away empty-handed. It's a high-risk duel for both teams in one of the most anticipated games of the second matchday of the Europa League.

Here's what you need to know before you tune in.

Storylines

Manchester United's three-game winless run in all competitions raises new questions about the team's direction as neither the coach nor the players have really impressed this season, even on the days they have won. They dominated against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and against Twente in European competition, but failed to capitalize on their chances and were held to a draw, demonstrating some real goal-scoring problems. They have scored just five goals in six Premier League games and not a single one of their players has scored more than one goal or assist this league season.

However, Sunday's 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur was by far their least convincing performance of the season. United's entire squad looked absent for most of the game, conceding 26 shots while going back to 10 and eventually conceding three goals. The performance was reminiscent of last season when they conceded exorbitant shots and goals. However, last season they scored almost the same goals – something that has not carried over into this season.

forecast

United's dismal start to the season suggests another disappointing performance could be expected on Thursday, particularly against Portugal's second best team who still have a lot to prove. Expect the two sides to cancel each other out and share the points. Choose: Porto 1, Manchester United 1
