A Michigan rabbi's home was robbed at gunpoint by an unknown assailant

A gunman broke into a rabbi's home near Detroit as he, his family and University of Michigan students gathered for a meal to celebrate the upcoming Jewish New Year, Bloomberg reported Thursday.

Police were called to the rabbi's address at 10:40pm last night where around twenty guests were celebrating Rosh Hashanah.

All occupants escaped and no one was injured in the incident, although a purse was reportedly stolen, Assistant Police Chief Aaron Huguley said.

Police have found someone connected to the incident but are still searching for the shooter responsible for the incident.

Motive behind the incident

“We have nothing to suggest a targeted attack against the Jewish community,” Huguley said, explaining why police did not consider the incident a hate crime. “The motive seems to be to take things.”

“We are working individually with the students involved in the Southfield incident,” Colleen Mastony, the school’s associate vice president for public affairs, said in a statement. “We are also in contact with parents and families as well as religious organizations.”
