Storms possible on the Treasure Coast due to the Gulf system and Kirk

Rain chances are forecast to increase on the Treasure Coast into the weekend, driven by a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico as Hurricane Kirk continues to move northeast hundreds of miles east, bringing beach hazards such as rip currents and high waves must be expected on the coast.

The disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico could bring rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches by the middle of next week, with higher amounts possible in some areas and sporadic thunderstorms possible after Sunday, a meteorologist said.

A weather system in the Gulf of Mexico was forecast to reach the Florida Peninsula by Sunday, bringing heavy rains and possible flooding, as well as an increased chance of storms, a meteorologist said Thursday, Oct. 3, 2024.

High waves and rough water are also expected Sunday from Hurricane Kirk, a Category 3 storm that is expected to continue turning northeast over the weekend.

“We don't want people going out in that 3- to 5-foot surf where the risk of rip currents is high,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jared Heil.
