Gas leak blocks central thoroughfare in Avondale Estates

A gas leak at a road construction project in downtown Avondale Estates is causing traffic problems in the DeKalb County town Thursday afternoon.

A large gas line ruptured around midday at a road construction site along East College Avenue and North Avondale Road near the intersection with Pine Street, DeKalb fire officials confirmed. Authorities said there was no danger to residents and that no buildings needed to be evacuated.

North Avondale Road will remain closed until Atlanta Gas Light crews can stop the leak, a DeKalb fire department spokesman said.

The area around the site of the gas leak is the commercial hub of Avondale Estates, and the rupture has caused some restaurants to temporarily close.

My Parents Basement, a beer-focused restaurant and comic book store, posted on Instagram that its “kitchen will remain closed until further notice due to an unfortunate gas leak currently occurring.”
