Elaine Sharp Gulf Breeze doctor arrested for two counts of murder

Embattled doctor Gulf Breeze, accused of running a pill factory from her office, was arrested on Thursday on two counts of murder.

Officials with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office confirmed to the News Journal that officers served a Santa Rosa County arrest warrant for the 72-year-old Dr. just after 1 p.m. Elaine Sharp and booked into the Escambia County Jail on two counts of murder.

Sharp, a gynecologist and gynecologist based in Gulf Breeze, has been the subject of investigations by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI since June 2023, when reports suggested some of her patients may have died as a result of her “dangerous prescribing practices.”

Concerns cited in the reports include that Sharp prescribed 120 tablets containing 4 milligrams of hydromorphone, “representing a large amount of a powerful opioid medication,” and prescribed high doses of controlled substances without performing necessary physical exams or pain assessments.

One of their patients, designated “DD,” reportedly died on March 2, 2021 from an accidental overdose of acute oxycodone toxicity after the patient filled a prescription from Sharp for 120 tablets of oxycodone 30 milligrams.

Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo signed an emergency order in June 2023 prohibiting her from prescribing or ordering controlled substances.

Sharp will be extradited to Santa Rosa County, where she will be held without bail pending an initial appearance.

Who is Dr. Elaine Sharp?

According to the Florida Department of Health, Sharp received her first license to practice medicine in 1989 and practiced primarily in the specialties of obstetrics and gynecology.

She studied medicine at the University of Texas-Houston and completed her residency in Tulsa, Oklahoma, consistent with her Department of Health Specialist profile. She eventually opened her own practice on El Rito Drive in Gulf Breeze.

In 2017, Sharp began prescribing controlled substances to treat both opioid addiction and chronic malignant pain. According to the Department of Health, Sharp soon gained a reputation for prescribing painkillers in significantly higher doses than other pain doctors.

According to Florida Department of Health records, no disciplinary or administrative action was taken against her prior to the current investigation into Sharp.

FDLE, Elaine Sharp fights civil suit over money related to possible crimes

Before she was arrested for murder, the FDLE seized over $20,000 from Sharp in July 2023 on the grounds that the money was earned through conspiracy to commit extortion, conspiracy to sell controlled substances under Transportation Schedule II, and a handful of unlawful prescribing practices.

The department also accuses Sharp of laundering money through her private practice in Gulf Breeze. They are currently in a civil lawsuit to allow FDLE to keep the seized money.

The presiding judge ordered the case to move to mediation in May 2024.

When Ladapo ordered Sharp to stop purchasing and prescribing controlled substances in 2023, it came after pharmacies refused to fill their prescriptions for years.
