Manchester United face Porto in the second game of the 2024/25 Europa League season on Thursday evening.

Erik ten Hag's side will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Spurs, with the Dutchman under huge pressure following a string of disappointing results.

Rumors are rife that Ten Hag only has two games left to save his job after United's first game of the new league phase also saw a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace and a 1-1 draw against the FC Twente gave.

Porto haven't had the same problems as United in the league, although they lost 3-2 to Bodo/Glimt in their first Europa League game. So tonight could be a much-needed win for Ten Hag ahead of this weekend's friendly away game at Aston Villa.

Benni McCarthy talks about Erik ten Hag

“In modern football I think players want to see a little more passion in their coach,” the former Porto and Blackburn striker told the Portuguese media ZeroZero. “They have to feel that the coach is with them and is ready to fight alongside them.

“Tactically, I have the feeling that Erik is at the top. He's missing a bit of that fire, that passion. That’s where we differ, he and I.”

Erik ten Hag's former assistant claims Manchester United manager lacks 'fire and passion'

It continued to be a difficult start to the season for the club, leaving them in 13th place in the Premier League with just two wins from their first six games.

Porto vs Man Utd prediction

It's impossible to predict how United will play on any given day, but given recent results and the pressure, expect a shaky and nervy performance.

However, the fact that Porto suffered a defeat against Bodo/Glimt is encouraging and Erik ten Hag is likely to rest fewer players than his Portuguese counterpart.

Porto 1-1 Manchester United.

Predicted lineups and current odds

Here's how we see the two teams compete tonight. Man Utd should opt for pace in the forward line and Bruno Fernandes should once again control play in midfield:

Porto XI: Costa; Mario, Pedro, Perez, Moura; Varela, Gonzalez; Pepe, Sousa, Galeno; Omorodion.

Man Utd XI: Onana; Mazraoui, de Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Ugarte; Diallo, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund.

As for the latest odds from bookmakers. United's mediocre form means they are only slight favorites to win tonight, with Porto just behind at 17/10. But with the home advantage, the Portuguese team could have an advantage with the fans.

Man Utd first team news

For United, Sunday's nightmare against Spurs was made worse by the injury to Kobbie Mainoo, who limped shortly after Fernandes' red card. It is unknown how long the England international will be out for, but this game will certainly come early.

In his absence, Casemiro or Christian Eriksen are expected to return to United. Fernandes is also likely to be in the starting lineup considering he has to miss the next three league games.

In defense, expect ten Hag to line up with his seemingly preferred back five, with Dalot and Mazraoui at full-backs.

In attack, it might be time to bring in Rasmus Hojlund as ten Hag fights to save his job, with Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho likely to start on the wings.

Porto early team news

Porto have no new injury concerns after their easy 4-0 win over Arouca last weekend. However, attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira, on loan from Arsenal, is a doubt after suffering a muscle injury in early September.

Summer signing Samu Omorodion will lead the team, with Galeno, Pepe and Vasco Sousa expected to play behind the striker.

Nico Gonzalez and Alan Varela will form the midfield, while Joao Mario, José Pedro, Nehuén Pérez and Francisco Moura will form the expected back four.

Porto vs Man Utd

The Red Devils are under immense pressure after their humiliating 3-0 defeat to Tottenham last week. Rumors are circulating that Erik ten Hag only has two games left to save his job – this game and this weekend's away game at Aston Villa.

United began their Europa League campaign with a tentative, worrying 1-1 draw at home to FC Twente and now travel to northern Portugal to face Porto, who are second in the Primeira Liga and have won six of their seven league games won.

It should be an exciting affair at the Estádio do Dragão and with a troubled United likely to be without Kobbie Mainoo, who knows what could happen when these former Champions League winners meet in Europe's second-tier competition.
