Chicago police provide update after officer is shot twice – NBC Chicago

Chicago police are releasing more details after an officer and another person were shot in the Englewood neighborhood on Thursday.

According to Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling, officers were conducting an investigative stop in the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue Thursday morning when they began searching for a person.

During this search, officers discovered that the person was armed with a pistol that was in his waistband. As officers tried to remove the gun from his waistband, the gun accidentally went off, Snelling said.

At this point, it is believed the bullet struck the subject and one of the officers, both of whom were taken to area hospitals.

Snelling said the officer was in good condition following the incident and the person's condition has stabilized.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability has been notified of the incident and is participating in an investigation, the organization said in a statement.
