The first win-or-go-home game of the 2024 MLB postseason is here. The Milwaukee Brewers host the New York Mets in Game 3 of the Wild Card Series on Thursday night. The winner advances in the playoff round to face the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS. The loser goes home for the offseason.

The Mets won Game 1 on Tuesday and were six outs away from winning the series on Wednesday night. But the Brewers fought back against reliever Phil Maton and scored three runs in the eighth inning to win Game 2 and force the deciding match in this best-of-three series. This is only the second Game 3 in MLB Wild Card Series history. Ten of the 12 series have been two-game sweeps, and now both Game 3s involve the Mets, who lost to the Padres at this spot at Citi Field two years ago.

Here's what you need to know about the Mets and Brewers in the Wild Card Series.

Mets: The Mets are making their second postseason appearance in the last three years. New York's chances of reaching October seemed limited after a brutal May in which they lost 19-9. The Mets then bounced back and recorded their 40th second-half victory on Monday, winning the first game of a doubleheader against the Braves and clinching their spot in the playoffs.

As an additional subplot to this series, the Mets are led by former Brewers manager David Stearns. Stearns, who led the Brewers from 2015-22, took a step back for the 2023 season before leaving the organization to join the Mets.

Brewer: The Brewers are making their sixth postseason appearance in the last seven years. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the wildcard round on three of those trips. Milwaukee will look to turn around their recent successes in October, after a season in which they finally took control of the Central in late April.
