PD units respond to bar brawl

Multiple BCPD units recently responded to a bar fight at Fox's BBQ on Nevada Way where an officer reportedly attempted to take the Taser away.

The incident occurred on Sunday, September 22nd. (Note that the incident was reported in very basic form as part of the Police Blotter in the September 26 issue of the Review. The information in the dispatch report was very limited, saying only that a fight occurred without specifying the location and details To obtain further information, the review had to make an official records request. A PDF version of the entire incident report was received on Saturday, September 28th.

According to the report, police were called at 5:33 p.m. regarding an alleged active bar fight involving multiple people. All active police units on both day and night shifts also responded to the location, according to the report.

The first officer on scene reported that he was driving past Fox's when the call came in and arrived at the scene “almost immediately” after the call came in.

The officer reported that upon entering he observed a group of about ten people who were very agitated and screaming. He did not report seeing any beatings.

While attempting to separate the individuals involved, one began moving aggressively toward another patron and the officer drew his Taser and pointed it at the aggressive individual. At that point, the report states that another man, who had previously been ordered by police to leave the bar, re-entered the bar and attempted to grab the officer's Taser.

The report states: “A brief scuffle ensued as we fought for the stun gun to the outside door of the bar. As we walked in the door I heard someone announce that he shouldn't tase (suspects) because he has a pacemaker. Because (the suspect) had a pacemaker, coupled with the fact that I was clearly identified as a police officer, and because I (the suspect) was wrestling for a weapon while several people were nearby, I punched (the suspect) in the chin with my right fist. At that point, the suspect released my Taser and was placed in handcuffs.”

According to police, the entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras and the video was downloaded for evidence.

The suspect was arrested and booked into the Henderson City Jail on charges of disorderly conduct and making a false statement to an officer or obstructing an officer.
