Man charged with attempted murder after officers come under fire in Asheville

A man is charged with attempted murder after Buncombe County officers came under fire on Thursday, Oct. 3.

According to a news release, officers responded to a wellness check in the 100 block of Pisgah View Road in Asheville when four shots were fired. Officers took cover until the Buncombe County Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiators arrived.

After a hearing, deputies said 64-year-old Douglas Bruce Wells, a white male, was taken into custody.

Wells was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree assault, two counts of assault on a government official and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held without bail at the Buncombe County Detention Center.

“We thank the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office, the Buncombe County Special Response Team and our law enforcement partners for their critical involvement in this case,” Thursday's news release said. “As the investigation is ongoing, we cannot release any further information at this time.”
