Mets vs. Brewers result: Pete Alonso's game-winning home run sends New York to the NLDS and eliminates Milwaukee

The New York Mets move on 2024 MLB Playoff Seriesand the Milwaukee Brewers' season is over. Mets slugger Pete Alonso hit a game-winning, three-run home run off Brewers closer Devin Williams in the ninth inning, with New York just two outs away from elimination. The Mets earned a 4-2 win and will face the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLDS.

It is the Mets' first playoff series win since 2015. The Brewers, on the other hand, have still not won a postseason series since 2018. Milwaukee was just two outs away from ending that series, but Alonso scored on a 3-1 changeup from Williams over the right field fence to give New York its first lead of the night.

Milwaukee hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning from Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick, marking the team's only run of the night. Bauers came into the game as a pinch-hitter and brought Mets righty Jose Buttó deep on a 3-2 changeup. Frelick, who hit two home runs in 475 at-bats during the regular season, went deep on the very next pitch.

The Mets overcame a slow start to the 2024 season to finish 89-73 and secure the sixth and final spot in the NL playoff field. They clinched a playoff spot in Atlanta on Monday, won the Wild Card Series in Milwaukee on Thursday and will play NLDS Game 1 in Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon.
