Central notes: Rondo, Tyson, Okoro, Jerome, Duren, White

When Rondo District married his first NBA coach this summer Doc Rivers was one of the participants, writes ESPN's Baxter Holmes. Rivers motivated and encouraged Rondo to get into coaching this season.

That's exactly what Rondo does, as he acts as a guest trainer for them dollar during training camp. According to Holmes, Rondo will remain with the Bucks in an undetermined role for the remainder of the season. Rondo said he “absolutely” hopes to become a head coach one day.

“There are a lot of factors that go into coaching,” Rondo said. “You just can’t say, I’m going to be a coach, and then everything works out and that’s how it happens.” So certain personalities have to fit together, [and there’s] a lot of sacrifice. There are certain things I'm learning. The morning meetings, the amount of hours spent watching movies, it’s a lot.”

Rondo declined to say whether he had received additional offers from teams. However, in June it was reported that he was high on the list of preferred employees for… JJ Redick.

We have more from the Central Division:

  • Cavaliers rookie Jaylon Tyson — the No. 20 overall pick this year — is making a strong first impression so far in training camp, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. “Our tower impressed me,Max Strus said. “He plays basketball the right way. He is mature in the way he behaves. He's not out here asking for the ball or trying to do too much. He's just trying to get in where he belongs. As a newbie, it's not always easy. It's impressive to see that. It's refreshing to have a newbie do that.“All three players asked about their immediate standout are Tyson, who did a little bit of everything from rebounding to strong defense to shooting.” While Cleveland has a strong rotation, there's a chance Tyson will make an immediate impact might.
  • Isaac Okoro admitted he considered accepting Cleveland's one-year qualifying offer to enter unrestricted free agency next year before signing his three-year, $38 million contract. “In my head I was like, “No, I think Cleveland wants me and I want to be here.” I wanted to be here, said Okoro. Fedor writes in a separate article that head coach Kenny Atkinson is considering an expanded role for Okoro. Okoro is expected to appear more often and add variety to his game for the Cavaliers.
  • In the same piece, members of the Cavaliers continue to point this out Ty Jerome as the standout player in camp, according to Fedor. “Ty was one of the best players in camp in my opinion,Darius Garland said. Jerome could be a surprising member of the rotation since he was previously coached by Atkinson at Golden State and the front office likes him.
  • Jalen Duren was an effective rim runner and shot blocker in his first two seasons as a member of the Pistons. However, according to Omari Sankofa II of the Detroit Free Press, Detroit is hoping to unlock other aspects of Duren's game – namely his style of play. He's been a playmaking anchor in camp and with only three true playmakers on the roster, Duren could be relied upon sooner rather than later. “I think we'll let him play with the ball a bit,“Head coach JB Bickerstaff said. “Whether he rebounds the ball defensively and has the ability to move it up a little bit, whether he catches it with his elbow and we're playing split action, and he can make those assessments. So I think we're just trying to diversify the areas that it goes into and then we'll build from there.
  • DeMar DeRozan left the Bulls for the Kings this offseason, but is still giving advice to the runner-up Most Improved Player Coby Whitesaid Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. White is aiming to limit the number of days away from the game as a scorer after last year's breakthrough. “It has to be one thing every night. … I have to build on that, said White. “I talked to DeMar a lot about that, how he prepares for every moment.
