Arrest made after pedestrian killed in hit-and-run crash in Fairfield

An arrest was made hours after a driver struck and killed a pedestrian in Fairfield before driving away, according to police. It was the second fatal accident involving a pedestrian in the city in 24 hours. Fairfield police said a man was crossing Sunset Avenue Thursday morning when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver. Officials said officers spotted the suspect driver on Pennsylvania Avenue around 2 p.m. and conducted a traffic stop. John Steingass, 62, was arrested and taken to the Solano County Jail where he was charged with hit-and-run. Fairfield police said that within the last 30 days there have been seven pedestrian-involved accidents within the city that resulted in injuries. It was the second fatal accident involving a pedestrian in the city in 24 hours.

According to Fairfield police, a man was crossing Sunset Avenue Thursday morning when he was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver.

Officials said officers spotted the suspected driver on Pennsylvania Avenue around 2 p.m. and conducted a traffic stop.

John Steingass, 62, was arrested and booked into the Solano County Jail on a hit-and-run charge.

Fairfield police said there have been seven accidents involving pedestrians that resulted in injuries in the city in the last 30 days. The police announced that they would further increase traffic surveillance.
