An 11-year-old student is injured in a Jenks school bus accident

An 11-year-old student is still recovering from a severe cut, a concussion and some pain after a Jenks bus driver fell asleep at the wheel Wednesday.

Elizabeth Casey is Alex Coovey's older sister. She went to the hospital with her mother after the school called to inform her of the incident.

“It was pretty traumatic. When we went back there, we were told it was a small laceration on his forehead and that he was actually completely covered in blood,” Casey said.

In a letter to Jenk's parents, the district said the bus driver fell asleep, which caused the accident. It occurred on the Cherokee Turnpike around mile marker 6 near Locust Grove.

Alex says he was already afraid before the accident on the bus.

“He took really sharp turns. That made us fall out of our seats,” he said.

Alex doesn't remember hitting his head; All he remembers is that things got really rough and other kids were crying.

“I asked for help and a teacher came back to the spot and I thought I had a bloody nose. I didn't do that. I obviously had a head injury,” Alex said.

Casey says it could have been a lot worse, but she's still angry that it happened.

“I hope no one’s child will ever be left in his care again. The more we talk about it, the more frustrated I get,” Casey said.

The district told parents that the bus driver was charged with “inattentive driving,” which caused the accident, according to OHP.

The driver was fired and the district says he will never drive for Jenks schools again. The incident was also reported to the Ministry of Transport.
