Three-minute videos will be possible on YouTube Shorts starting October 15th

What's the story?

YouTube has announced significant updates to its short-video platform YouTube Shorts.

Starting October 15, YouTubers will be able to upload videos up to three minutes long, a feature that has been highly requested by users.

The move is seen as an attempt to compete with TikTok, which currently allows videos up to 10 minutes long and has steadily increased the limit over the years.

YouTube Shorts introduces a template feature for creators

In addition to the expanded video length, YouTube is introducing a template feature for Shorts.

With this new tool, YouTubers can reproduce the format of other shorts and adapt their clips to trending sounds from different videos.

The template feature aims to simplify the process, follow trends, or mimic another user's editing options.

YouTube's Template Feature: An Answer to TikTok and Instagram Reels

YouTube's introduction of the template feature is seen as a response to similar features on TikTok and Instagram Reels.

These platforms allow users to choose from preset video styles and modify their clips based on personal preferences.

Instagram Reels also offers a template feature that allows creators to copy editing options with just a few clicks.

YouTube's efforts to promote Shorts as a TikTok alternative

YouTube is actively promoting Shorts as an alternative to TikTok by introducing similar features and financially supporting creators.

The company also recognizes that some users prefer less short content and more traditional, long-form videos.

To address this issue, YouTube is adding the Show Less Shorts option, which will temporarily reduce the number of Shorts videos in a user's home feed.
