Man accused of stabbing Woodbury police officer faces trial

WOODBURY, CT (WFSB) – A man was scheduled to face a judge Friday, a day after state police said he stabbed an officer in Woodbury.

Tyler Wilmot, 31, of Woodbury, was charged with first-degree assault, criminal attempt to murder, assault on a public safety officer, obstructing an officer, operating a motor vehicle without a license, obliterating a license plate and failing to display a license plate.

Wilmont had been detained since the incident on Thursday.

State police said the officer, identified as Tim Wright of the Woodbury Resident Trooper's Office, is expected to be OK.

“He is very lucky that the injuries were not near a major artery. But prompt treatment contributed to a quick recovery,” said Connecticut State Police Sgt. Luke Davis.

Officials said Thursday that Wright spotted a dark-colored Jeep Grand Cherokee on North Main Street in Woodbury that did not have a proper license plate displayed.

Wright signaled the driver to stop the vehicle and the driver drove into an apartment complex.

However, the driver, identified as Wilmot, exited his vehicle and approached Wright. State police said Wilmot was verbally aggressive and refused to comply with demands.

According to police, a physical altercation ensued during which Wilmot stabbed Wright in the neck with a knife.

As that happened, another Woodbury officer arrived to help.

State police said the suspect attempted to flee on foot but was stopped by a Taser and taken into custody.

A third officer took Wright to a local hospital for treatment.

The injured officer is expected to make a full recovery, officials confirmed.

Wilmot was arrested and transported to a hospital. He was later released into the custody of state police.

Wilmot was held on a $3 million bond.
