Pittsburgh officer injured while responding to gas station accident and fire

PITTSBURGH, Pa. — A Pittsburgh police officer was injured Thursday evening while responding to a crash and fire at the Coen gas station on East Carson Street at East 24th Street on the city's south side.

Police, fire and emergency services were dispatched to the Coen site around 11:20 p.m. to reports of a fire around the gas pumps that had been struck by a vehicle. The fire was quickly extinguished.

The man driving the vehicle was on the road and began fighting with officers.

Shortly before hitting the gas pumps, the suspect also struck an occupied vehicle in an alley behind the Coen and fled the scene. The driver of this vehicle was uninjured.

It is believed that the suspect was heavily under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. He was taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. It is unclear what charges he will face.

An officer was also hospitalized after sustaining a hand injury.

The investigation is ongoing.
