The trial of a Bristol police officer accused of killing a driver is approaching

A trial date has been set for a police officer accused of causing death by dangerous driving while pursuing a vehicle in an unmarked car.

Avon and Somerset Police constable Matthew Pike, 38, previously appeared at Bristol Crown Court accused of killing Keryl Johnson in November 2021.

He also faces an alternative charge of causing Dr. Johnson's death due to careless or reckless driving during the Newfoundland Circus incident in Bristol.

Mr. Pike did not enter a plea and a tentative trial date was set for January 5th.

He was released on unconditional bail.

Jocelyn Ledward KC, prosecuting, told the court: “This case arises from a fatal collision that occurred shortly after midnight on November 5, 2021, resulting in the death of Keryl Johnson.”

The court heard that Pike had been driving an unmarked police car which chased another vehicle which then hit Dr. Johnson's car collided.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct previously said the charges related to a traffic accident at Newfoundland Circus in 2021.

The two indictments state that Dr. Johnson died 11 days after the crash.
