Annaleigh Ashford talks about the Dust Bowl thriller

ComingSoon editor-in-chief Tyler Treese spoke to Hold Your Breath star Annaleigh Ashford about the psychological thriller. Ashford discussed the film's location, her love of period pieces and more. It is now streaming on Hulu.

“In 1930s Oklahoma, amid the region’s terrible dust storms, a woman (Sarah Paulson) becomes convinced that a sinister presence is threatening her family,” the synopsis reads.

Tyler Treese: I love the look of Hold Your Breath and it also speaks to the directors, especially the way they shot it, but the setting feels like a character. What was it like filming in New Mexico and dealing with all the dust blowing around there?

Annaleigh Ashford: What a great question. Um, like you said, the setting is absolutely a character in the film and it was absolutely a force. During filming, we had to clear the land on which the house in the film stands, is being built and, um, as a result, the land responded. You know, one of the narrative threads of the film is the effects of climate change. That was a man-made climate catastrophe, the decal, a lot of people don't know about it, and it happened a hundred years ago, and while we're just dealing with the man-made climate catastrophes, um, we cleared the land and then we had a small one Dust storm. Because the country was like, uh, don't touch me. I don't like that. Isn't that fascinating? That means, yes. It was a character in the film.

Such a journey can also be seen in the film in the 1930s. What did you like most about that time, wearing old clothes and so on?

I love historical pieces. I love being transported back in time and space. Also, I'm just lucky and very grateful that I met my great-grandmothers and grandfathers and two of my great-grandmothers and grandfathers actually lived through the Dust Bowl. Her family lost their farms and this part of the country during the Great Depression. So it was really nice and familial for me to pay some kind of homage to my relatives who experienced this time, this pain and this loss. I felt so much compassion for the people who lived in that part of the country at that time.

This is really something special. One of my favorite moments for you in Hold Your Breath is that really emotional scene where your son is kidnapped. Could you say something about filming this scene? Do you really bring a lot of great emotions?

I am a mother of one, almost two children. I could literally give birth right now, my second baby is about to go into labor. But every time I play a mother, and especially a mother who has a feeling of heartbreak or some kind of heartbreak, it always hits close to home for me. I just had so much empathy for this character and this woman and also for the women who lived in that time. The lack of support they had as mothers, as wives, and really as women is so evident in the way this character is treated in the film. So I'm glad I was able to show this to the audience so they can have compassion for people who are experiencing trauma.
