New York Knicks hire franchise legend Patrick Ewing

As if this offseason couldn't get more eventful, the New York Knicks are bringing back one of the most famous names in franchise history.

The Knicks and Madison Square Garden announced Friday that Patrick Ewing has been named to a front office position, a newly created role of “basketball ambassador.” In a statement from the Knicks, Ewing's new title will include “both basketball and business activities.”

“As I said the day my No. 33 jersey was hoisted under the rafters at MSG, I will always be a Knick and always a New Yorker. “I can’t wait to get started in this new position and officially be back.” “The organization I love so much,” Ewing said in the statement. “The Garden has always been my home and I look forward to working with (President) Leon Rose, Coach (Tom) Thibodeau, the team and everyone else who makes this place so special.”

Ewing, of course, is best known for his illustrious playing career, which spanned 15 seasons with the Knicks after being selected with the top overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. The Georgetown alum made all 11 of his NBA All-Star Game appearances in a Knicks jersey, and as he previously mentioned, his number 33 was immortalized on MSG's ceiling.

Ewing was named to the NBA's anniversary teams in 1996 and 2021 and continues to be at or near the top of several franchise records. Now his return to the Knicks front office will give him the chance to check one last item off his to-do list for the metropolis: win a championship.

“The New York Knicks and Patrick Ewing are synonymous with each other, and we are honored and excited to bring Patrick home,” Rose added in the Knicks’ announcement. “Patrick is a monumental figure in the history of New York basketball and brings a wealth of knowledge from his time on and off the court that is unparalleled. We are thrilled that Patrick will be back in the blue and orange.”

It's been a busy week for Ewing, who was also honored to join the coaching staff of the United States Men's National Basketball Team for the upcoming AmeriCup Tournament qualifying showdowns.
