Mother and Son's Jive Dance in Their Living Room Goes Viral: “Core Memory”

A mother-son duo from the north west of England have gone viral for their impressive dancing skills.

Thomas Hayes, 20, posted the video on TikTok of the couple singing along to Olivia Dean's version of “You Can't Hurry Love.” Their smooth spins and sharp kicks earned them high praise, and viewers on the platform rated their routine 10 out of 10, a perfect score.

“We both learned to dance at a young age – I was 10 and so was my mother [Sarah Hayes] “She learned that when she was eight,” said Hayes from Liverpool Newsweek. Sarah even worked as an assistant teacher at the dance school where Hayes honed his skills as a child.

Many TikTok users commented that Sarah Hayes, Thomas Hayes' mother, is on the popular British talent show Strictly Come Dancing.

Hayes, who goes by @tomhayes1234 on TikTok, explained that the jive is a very fast Latin dance with lots of kicks and moves. Dancing was in many ways a family affair, although Hayes captioned his video, “This is why my brother moved out.”

“Many in the family dance, but not everyone. My brother doesn’t dance at all and is the exact opposite of me.” [He] is not interested in that,” Hayes said Newsweek.

Recently, Hayes and his mother began practicing together in their living room for fun. “We actually worked quite well together,” he added.

Since it was posted on September 30, Hayes' clip has received over 5.5 million views as well as thousands of comments from other social media users who can't get enough of the couple.

“Imagine her mother and son dancing at his wedding,” one user wrote. And another said: “This is definitely a key memory for her.”

One user also shared that she danced around the kitchen with her boys when they were little. Now that they're older and bigger, she gets tossed around by them. “It's crazy having to stare at babies at 6 feet,” she added.

Many also called for Sarah to appear on the popular Saturday night show Be sure to come dance– the British version of Dancing with the stars. One user said that Sarah really “ate up” her performance and didn't leave any crumbs behind.

“The response was really good and positive. [We] I didn’t expect to get as much interaction as we did,” Hayes said Newsweek. The couple hopes to inspire more people to get up and dance with their viral clip.
