Katie Santry on TikTok finds a buried rug outside her home in Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio – A Columbus woman has gone viral on TikTok after sharing a story about finding a rug buried in her yard. Now Columbus police are involved and investigators are stationed outside her home.

Katie Santry has lived at East Columbus House for about a year. She said she came across the strange discovery while digging holes for fence posts.

“We were building a fence and came across a carpet while digging a post wall. It was strange, but I kind of let it go,” Santry told 10TV on Thursday night.

Some time later, she said her computer was broken and her desk was scattered in the middle of the night, but no one in the house reportedly did it.

“I jokingly said, 'Did the body in the carpet do that?' and I posted that on TikTok and now everyone has seen it,” she said.

Santry said she wanted to leave the rug-like material alone, but was persuaded by TikTok viewers to call the police to dig it up.

“When they first came out, they didn’t think anything of it, and I think because of the virality of TikTok, they called me today [Thursday] when my friends and I actually wanted to dig up this carpet today out of curiosity,” she said.

Columbus police told her they wanted to bring K-9s to investigate.

Santry streamed part of the investigation on TikTok on Thursday afternoon. More than 100,000 users tuned in at one point to watch as she showed a video of the K-9s sniffing around her yard.

At one point, Santry observes the dog sniffing a spot and then sitting down. You can hear her panting in the video.

“The world saw the dogs sitting on the hole, and that’s kind of where it ended,” Santry said.

When asked about the home's previous owners, Santry told reporters they were in their 90s and had moved into a nursing home. She believes they were the only owners before her family moved in.

As viewers tuned in to see what happened next in the investigation, Santry watched her fan base grow.

“The day I posted it I had 6,000 followers,” she said. “It happened like a finger snap. I didn’t expect virality in the slightest.”

A nearby neighbor who has lived in his home for 20 years told 10TV the attention was disturbing and alarming.

“It’s the loudest noise we’ve heard in a long time,” he said. “I hope that they find what they are looking for and that we can return to a normal, calm and peaceful life.”

Columbus police began excavating outside the home Friday morning.
