WorkSafeBC is investigating a crane incident in Oakridge under new regulations

This comes after new provincial regulations came into effect on Tuesday. The new regulations aim to improve safety and oversight when operating tower cranes. These rules require employers to provide WorkSafeBC with a notice of project (NOP) before erecting, boarding, repositioning or dismantling a tower crane and ensuring a qualified supervisor is on site.

Employers must also inform the agency about the timing of the work, the supervisor and the qualifications of the supervisor.

“These regulations will give us more information about where and when tower cranes are operating across the province and ensure they are operated by skilled workers,” a WorkSafeBC spokesperson said, according to the CBC report.

Earlier this year, in response to several crane accidents, WorkSafeBC conducted a safety review that led to the implementation of these new regulations. As part of a broader crane safety strategy, WorkSafeBC is also considering improvements to its crane operator certification program and expanding its crane inspection team.
