Tomatoes are growing in the gutter of a Welsh hospital affected by a leak, the condition is so shocking

A member of the public captured a picture of the shocking and overgrown condition of the gutters at the leak-hit Princess of Wales Hospital during his visit this week.

Urgent work has been carried out at Bridgend Hospital in recent days after rainwater was found to be entering the building, with some patients having to be moved alongside non-urgent appointments.

The leaks damaged ceilings in the hospital. The cause is said to be due to the fact that an area of the roof that was already in need of repair was hit by heavy rain over the weekend.

However, a photo taken by a citizen shows the heavily overgrown gutter, filled with what appears to be grass, weeds and even a tomato plant coming out.

Responding to the image, a spokesman for Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said clearing the foliage in “small sections of the gutters” was now a key priority of the work being carried out.

They said: “Removing the leaves, which have quickly become lodged in small sections of the gutters, is one of the priorities for the work currently underway at the hospital. Accessing some areas of the roof is a complex operation and we are grateful for the cooperation and understanding of patients as we undertake this extensive maintenance program.
