Second woman arrested in Maquon murder

A 78-year-old Maquon woman is in custody on murder charges in connection with the death of the village's former police chief.

Karen J. Doubet was arrested at her home in Maquon on a Knox County warrant. She is accused in the death of Richard Young, whose decomposing remains were found in a storage unit in Maquon in October 2022.

According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Doubet is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault by administration of a toxic substance and concealing a homicidal death.

Marcy L. Oglesby, 52, also is charged in the case. Oglesby was initially arrested in 2022 for concealing a death following the discovery of Young's remains.

But as the investigation progressed, the charges against Oglesby were expanded in February 2023 to include murder, aggravated assault by administering a toxic substance and concealment of a murderous death.

Oglesby is accused of poisoning Young with eye drops and other drugs and hiding his body in the storage unit.

At a preliminary hearing for Oglesby in February 2023, law enforcement testified that Oglesby had been in a relationship with Young for about 20 years.

Young lived in Oglesby's home across the street from the storage unit with a third person, identified by law enforcement as Doubet.

Investigators said Doubet considered herself Oglesby's godmother — and both Doubet and Oglesby said Young died of a broken neck after falling in the bathroom.

In a news release, the sheriff's office said its investigative unit worked closely with Interim Prosecutor Sherry Lawson-Weaver and Assistant Prosecutor Ashley Worby on the case.
