The all-clear given for Scott gas leak

UPDATE: According to Scott Fire Department Chief Chad Sonnier, crews were able to stop the leak and the all-clear was given.

Sonnier tells us that the Scott Fire Department was called around 9:18 a.m. to a broken gas line in the 200 block of Anna Street. Firefighters discovered that a private contractor had cut a 4-inch gas line. The gas main distributes gas throughout the city of Scott, the chief says.

Emergency shelter orders were issued for two schools and an assisted living facility, and by 10:35 a.m. the city gas authority was able to secure the line and lift those orders.

Repair crews are currently on site and are carrying out appropriate repairs.

Due to the heavy equipment and emergency vehicles on scene, people are still asked to avoid the 200 block of Anna Street.

As a result, Scott Middle School, St Peter & Paul School and Acadiana Assisted Living were all housed on-site.

According to Scott Fire Department Chief Chad Sonnier, Lafayette Haz-Mat is on scene monitoring air quality so the shelter in place can be lifted as quickly as possible.

The repairs are expected to take three hours. Everyone is asked to avoid the area.
