A rare opportunity to marvel at the raw vocals of one of pop's most distinctive and talented singers – you will be impressed.

Britney Spears' “Toxic” was released in 2003 and became one of the singer's biggest and most enduring hits. Its driving techno-pop vibe, synth strings and catchy chorus have made it a dancefloor classic and a staple on many motivational playlists.

As with many great pop songs of the period, her voice was auto-tuned before the record's release – not least to give the vocal part that “processed” sound that, along with the low-end, was very fashionable in the early noughties.

However, in 2017, an original studio version was leaked before Auto-Tune was added. Britney's raw vocals are truly impressive. Listen below and prepare to be amazed.

The melody of “Toxic” is very edgy and would overwhelm any singer – but Britney just manages to pull off those dizzying leaps in the coolest way possible sotto voce. Also appreciate the genius of these iconic instrumental hooks. It's really a treat for the ears.

Spears has a soubrette-soprano voice type – which tends to be characterized by a bright, natural timbre, a mid-range tessitura, but without the dramatic coloratura of some other singing voices. It's what gives her voice the effortless cool she's made her own, while also allowing her to deliver the impressive virtuosity she expresses here.

The song was released on Britney's 2003 album In the zone. With vocals of this quality, she was definitely in the right mood for this song.
