The Spartans (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) lost 38-7 at home to Ohio State in their last game on Sept. 28. No. 6 Oregon (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) defeated UCLA, 34-14, in its last game on Sept. 28.

Oregon leads the all-time series between the teams 4-3. The Ducks defeated MSU 7-6 in the teams' last meeting in the 2018 Redbox Bowl.
