New details after tractor-trailer catches fire in accident west of Campbell

CAMPBELL, Neb. (KSNB) – A collision involving two semi-trucks and trailers left one vehicle on fire west of Campbell early Wednesday afternoon.

Officers from Campbell Fire and Rescue and Franklin County responded to the crash at Highway 4 and 43 Road around 1 p.m. The first callers reported that a semi-trailer was on fire after the accident.

Upon arrival, officers learned that a Peterbilt tractor-trailer driven by 75-year-old Patrick Stevens of Campbell was turning east on Highway 4 from 43 Road when it was struck by a Freightliner semi-trailer driven by the 24th -year-old Toby Scheuneman of Inavale was driving westbound on Highway 4.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, both semi-trucks came to rest in nearby ditches and the Freightliner caught fire.

Due to the severity of the accident, Campbell firefighters requested assistance from the Hildreth, Upland and Bladen fire departments.

One of the drivers was transported to the hospital by ambulance and the other by a private vehicle.

Both drivers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

The Webster County Sheriff's Office also assisted with traffic control.
