Some promising or disappointing news about the third season of Rings Of Power on Amazon

Amazon reportedly has a five-season plan for The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power, although strangely, even after the second season finale aired, the third season has not yet been officially confirmed. That could change soon, but whether you think that's a good thing or a bad thing depends on how you feel about the show.

Several people connected to Rings of Power are effectively saying that Season 3 is an attempt, from executive producer Charlotte Brändström:

“I can’t say much about season 3 yet, but I think there will be good news soon.”

For Morfydd Clark and Galadriel himself:

“There will be a season 3 at some point.”

This would reflect the idea of the five-season plan continuing to move forward, where in 2022 the showrunners said they already knew the series' “final shot” when it reached this point.

Further proof is the fact that Amazon is bragging about the viewership of the second season and not hiding it. Last week, Amazon confirmed that season two had 55 million viewers in just a month of release, even though viewership may have dropped significantly for the premiere. It's unclear if the season is doing poorly overall, but at this point Amazon may just be fixated on the series, with all the costumes, sets, scripts and visual effects already done for the show, which may be the most expensive in of history when all is said and done.

So that's good news for fans, but bad news for many Tolkien enthusiasts who would rather just let the series die, like my own colleague Erik Kain, who has been mulling over the series all season, including the finale. Proof that there is a large group of haters can be seen in the show's viewership, which was 48% overall on Rotten Tomatoes, although the second season was slightly higher (though still not great) at 58%. Whether you want to call it “review bombing” or not is up to you. There's certainly some level of culture war stuff going on here (black elves!), but a lot of it is based on “source material” that has fans arguing about whether this violates Tolkien canon versus others saying that the material on which it is based also does so nebulously that this is explained.

Given the solid numbers Amazon can share, its financial commitment to the series, and these quotes from those involved, it's almost certain that season three is coming. We'll know more soon, and you can celebrate or mourn that fact.
