YouTube Shorts now offers videos up to 3 minutes long: here's why

Last updated:

“Shorts” is no longer limited to short videos on YouTube

YouTube Shorts will be available longer starting later this month as the platform looks to appeal to creators while keeping up with the competition.

YouTube Shorts supports longer videos and will allow creators to upload content up to three minutes long starting October 15th. The platform has primarily focused on videos up to 60 seconds long, competing with TikTok and Instagram Reels. This update is in response to creator feedback as it was one of the most requested features and provides more storytelling opportunities.

The change only affects videos with square or vertical aspect ratios. Any videos uploaded before the implementation date will remain unaffected. Additionally, YouTube has committed to improving its recommendations for longer shorts in the coming month.

Additionally, the platform now allows users to recreate their favorite shorts using templates. These templates contain fresh music and unique elements, allowing users to experiment with the latest trends. To use these templates, users can simply select the “Remix” option in a favorite short film and click “Use this template”.

In the coming months, YouTube will expand the content accessible through the Shorts camera, allowing users to seamlessly remix music videos, clips from their favorite videos, and more. This new feature allows users to extract content from various YouTube videos, improving their creative possibilities and interactivity on the platform.

In addition, Google DeepMind's Veo video generation model will soon be available on YouTube Shorts, the company also said. Imaginary settings and independent video clips enable producers to realize their visions with this concept.

With the addition of a new option called Show Less Shorts, YouTube users have even more options to tailor their feeds to their interests. By clicking the three-dot menu in the top right corner of a Shorts grid in the user's home feed, they can select this option. When the feature is enabled, users will temporarily see fewer shorts in their home feeds.
