West Asheville man charged with attempted murder after shooting at officers


ASHEVILLE, N.C — A West Asheville man has been charged with multiple felonies, including attempted murder, after he shot at Buncombe County officers during a wellness check on Oct. 3, 2024, the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office said.

Officers arrived at a residence on Pisgah View Road for a wellness check when they were shot and approximately four shots were fired at them. Officers took cover until the Buncombe County Special Response Team and Crisis Negotiators arrived to secure the scene. After a brief negotiation, the suspect, identified as 64-year-old Douglas Bruce Wells, surrendered without further incident.

Wells was charged with three counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault on a government official and one count of assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held at the Buncombe County Detention Center.

The investigation is ongoing and no further details are currently available.

    ASBURY PARK, NJ – The annual Asbury Park Zombie Walk and Undead Festival will take over the city's boardwalk on Saturday, October 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The free event, now in its 16th year, will see thousands of attendees don their best zombie attire for a day dedicated to horror and the undead.

    The Zombie Walk, first launched in 2008, has grown into a huge celebration of zombie culture and attracts hordes of participants every year. In previous years, the event held the Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of zombies, with over 10,000 participants, before being surpassed by an event in Minneapolis in 2014.

    The walk begins at the Asbury Park Boardwalk and the day will be filled with horror-themed activities and entertainment, making it a must-see for fans of the undead.

  • Off-duty NYPD deputy arrested for criminal mischief in the Bronx

    BRONX, NY - An off-duty NYPD deputy was arrested late Wednesday night in the Bronx, according to police.

    Marciel Mojica, 50, was taken into custody in the 49th Precinct on October 2 at approximately 10:53 p.m. Mojica, an assistant officer with the NYPD, was charged with third-degree criminal mischief.

    Further details about the incident were initially not known. The investigation is ongoing.

  • Philadelphia police are investigating a fatal shooting and attempted robbery in West Philadelphia

    PHILADELPHIA - A 36-year-old man was fatally shot during an attempted robbery at a candy store in West Philadelphia late Wednesday night, according to police.

    Officers from the 16th Precinct responded to a report of a shooting in the 800 block of North 40th Street around 10:11 p.m. When they arrived, they found Terrell Jones, of North Ringgold Street, inside the store with multiple gunshot wounds. Medics pronounced Jones dead at 10:24 p.m

    A second person, identified as both the shooting victim and one of the perpetrators, was later found in the 700 block of Preston Street with gunshot wounds to the arm and chest. He was transported to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center in stable condition.

    According to the preliminary investigation, Jones was in the candy store when two male suspects attempted to rob him. One of the suspects shot at Jones, fatally wounding him, but Jones managed to return fire.

    The suspects fled the scene in a blue vehicle, which then collided with a SEPTA bus near 41st and Brown streets. The suspects then fled on foot. A 17-year-old suspect was found with gunshot wounds near Preston Street and taken into custody.
