A Knoxville man was arrested for suspected car theft and burglary.

According to court documents, on Sept. 6, a person later identified as 20-year-old August Cawley is seen on surveillance camera footage opening unlocked car doors and entering vehicles in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Cawley was accompanied by two other people. After Cawley allegedly finished getting into the vehicles, all three people walked west on Douglas St. around 1:16 a.m. According to police, camera footage shows Cawley entering an unlocked, parked and unoccupied motor vehicle parked in a residential driveway. Cawley is observed turning on the car using a key left in the vehicle and leaving the scene in the vehicle.

The vehicle was later located by Des Moines Police and sustained significant damage. The vehicle was valued at just over $3,900. Cawley is charged with second-degree theft, a Class D felony, and third-degree burglary, a serious misdemeanor. Cawley was arrested in September for another vehicle theft incident and pleaded guilty to a criminal mischief charge in July.
