Vehicle enters the canal after an accident in Pittsburg

Shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District responded to a report of a vehicle accident with water rescue after a vehicle entered a canal.

The accident occurred at 1:52 a.m. at Buchanan Road and Meadows Ave in the city of Pittsburg.

According to preliminary information, a man who was driving his car eastbound on Buchanan turned to avoid a car that he believed was heading westbound toward him and going the wrong way. As he swerved, he hit the center divider on the left side and then hit the right curb, where his car went over the right curb, tearing off his wheel and completely destroying the front end of his car.

The other vehicle drove through the fence and into the canal.

The Contra Costa County Fire Department dispatched a rapid water rescue to determine if anyone was in the vehicle. It later emerged that the vehicle was empty and the driver allegedly fled the scene of the accident.

It is unclear whether the Pittsburg Police Department has made an arrest in the incident related to a suspected drunk driving incident.
