According to the NBPD, the accident occurred in Neptune Beach near Penman Road around 10 p.m.

Another child, who was reportedly with the victim at the time, was uninjured. Both the driver and several witnesses remained on scene and cooperated with authorities.

The investigation has been turned over to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), which is investigating contributing factors. Even if no charges have been filed against the driver, the FHP will use its findings to determine whether a charge is warranted.

The boy's family has requested privacy and officials would not reveal whether the victim was a Fletcher High School student.

Neptune Beach Mayor Elaine Brown and DCPS School Board Member April Carney attended the press conference to mourn this loss.

Action News Jax will provide updates as the investigation continues.
