One person has been injured in a multi-car accident on I-40

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to a multi-car accident that resulted in injuries early Saturday morning, October 5th.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to a multi-car crash on I-40 eastbound early Saturday morning that left multiple people injured.

According to MPD, the accident occurred near Sycamore View Road around 12:30 p.m. According to reports, a car was traveling eastbound on I-40 when a dark blue Dodge Challenger passed them and was unable to stop, so they continued eastbound on the interstate. The driver of the car that was rear-ended had a dashboard camera that recorded the accident, but it was not accessible at the time of the report.

A third car, also traveling eastbound in the second lane, reported being rear-ended by the car that was originally hit. A fourth car on I-40 reported a crash after the car involved in the first crash lost control in the collision with the Dodge Challenger.

The police reported significant damage from the accident. The second car suffered damage to the front end, rear and rear passenger side; the third car sustained damage on both the driver and passenger sides; and the fourth car sustained damage to the front end and driver's side.

The second car was privately towed by Null's Towing, while the third and fourth cars were towed by White's Towing.

Memphis Fire Department (MFD) emergency responders arrived on scene and transported the driver of the third car to St. Francis Bartlett Hospital with non-critical injuries. After the accident, the driver received a notice of violation of the Financial Liability Act.

The driver of the fourth car involved was charged with driving without a valid state driver's license, violating the financial liability law and improper state registration.

Court dates for both drivers are set for November 13, 2024 at 9:00 a.m. at the Division 2 Courthouse located at 201 Poplar Avenue.

MPD says the investigation into the crash continues as authorities gather more information.
