Arrested for attempted murder after car hits people near Birmingham nightclub

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car “deliberately” drove into people outside a freshers’ event.

In the early hours of Friday morning, officers were called to Livery Street in central Birmingham after a car hit pedestrians near the Tunnel Club.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday and taken into custody for questioning, West Midlands Police said. Another man, who had previously been arrested on suspicion of a fight, was in hospital, police said.

“At this stage we believe this was an isolated and premeditated attack, linked to a previous incident at the nightclub,” said Det Ch Insp Dave Sproson of Birmingham Police.

Several people were injured when a car drove into a group in front of the nightclub and the car then drove away from the scene.

Police added that a total of six people were believed to have been injured in the incident and five were taken to hospital for treatment.

Two people remained in hospital Saturday but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Det Ch Insp Sproson said: “We are working hard to understand exactly what happened and why.

“At this stage we believe this was an isolated and premeditated attack relating to a previous incident at the nightclub.

“The investigation continues to make good progress but we would still appeal to anyone with information or mobile phone images to contact us via our dedicated website.”

Livery Street is close to Birmingham city center, close to an entrance to Snow Hill train station.
