NEW DELHI: Indian Premier League team Mumbai Indians will have to make tough decisions ahead of the mega auction later this year as their think tank faces the tall task of choosing players to retain from a host of superstars.
While the new rules allow franchises to retain up to six players, this will put a heavy strain on their auction coffers.
Apart from Hardik Pandya, the captain, the team also has five-time title winner Rohit Sharma as well as star pacer Jasprit Bumrah and India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav in its ranks. Additionally, the franchise also boasts a lot of young stars, including Ishan Kishan.
Amid talk of retention ahead of the auction, India captain Surya on Saturday cheekily dodged a question about his ambitions as IPL captain.
During a press conference ahead of the first T20I between India and Bangladesh, Surya said “dekhte hain” in response to a reporter's question when asked about captaincy in the IPL.
“Aapne googly daal diya aapne (laughs) (You put me in a wrong position). I am really enjoying this new role (as captain of India). When I played under Rohit Bhai's captaincy in MI, I always gave my best which reflects everything I felt at that time.
“I feel good for India too. I was already captain against Sri Lanka and before that against Australia and South Africa. I learned from other captains how to move the team forward. Aage dekhte hain. Chalt rahta hain. Baaki aapko pata toh chal hee jayega ((Let’s see how it goes. You’ll know the rest in due course),” was Surya’s witty response to the IPL leadership question.
In the last IPL, where Hardik was captain after Rohit was unceremoniously dropped, there were reports of disagreement in the Mumbai Indians camp over the all-rounder's leadership style. While the domestic players reportedly favored Rohit, foreign players supported Hardik.
In recent times, Surya's value has increased and now that he is leading the national team, it remains to be seen what Mumbai decides ahead of the IPL.
The five-time champions finished last in the league, with Kolkata Knight Riders winning the title.
