Odisha: Gas leak from abandoned factory triggers panic in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: Panic spread in Chandaka area of ​​Odisha's Bhubaneswar after a gas leak from an abandoned chemical factory on Saturday, officials said.

However, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities due to the gas leak, it said.

“Sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, leaked from a bottle. The cylinder has been moved to an isolated location and is being neutralized,” said DG (Fire Service) Dr. Sudhanshu Sarangi.

Sarangi said neutralizing compound limestone mixed with water was sprayed as a precautionary measure.

The gas detector does not show any concern for human life as the air standard remains within the normal and safe range, he said in a statement.

To prevent an unpleasant situation, Infocity police spatially blocked vehicular traffic along the route from Patia Chhak to Infocity Chhak. Meanwhile, the sudden mishap shocked residents in the area, one of the city's main commercial suburbs with a dozen IT parks near the Patia area.

However, the extent of the leak was estimated to be minimal as residents from surrounding areas did not experience any breathing difficulties or eye irritation.
